Referred to euphemistically in the Spanish term visitadora, meaning “visitor”. It deals with Captain Pantoja’s astonishing efficiency campaign to provide prostitution services. For quelling the sexual desires of the Peruvian army soldiers stationed in an aphrodisiacal Amazon jungle.
This interesting book was a 1984 Christmas present. From a dear female colleague, when most happily serving in Intevep, PDVSA.

Gazprom, Газпром has lost a quarter.

In 2017, Газпром’ net profit declined by 25% (!) to 714 billion, the firm said today in the report in accordance with IFRS.
Revenue from gas sales increased by 7% to 6.5 trillion rubles.
Net debt by 24% to RB 2.4 trillion.

Net profit of ” Gazprom”, the benchmark for dividend payment.
In mid-April the management Board recommended a dividend at the level of 2016 and 8.04 roubles per share.
I.e. payments can be sent to 190 billion rubles.

It turns out Gazprom can return to shareholders almost 27% in net profit.

This is our tribute to You and to Venezuela. Thanking you for the splendid time we were allowed to have with you all. Muchísimas graciás de corazón, un gran abrazo para nuestros amigos y familiares etc. etc..

Venezuela is a country very dear to me and my family. Located 60 south of the little rock where I was born, that I could often see with the naked eyes on clear days. It is the country where I began my geology and explorations career. Where I got the unique opportunity to enjoy each and every day. Where I was accepted to be an integral part of the local society and to assimilate with friends, colleagues, people. Everywhere.

Where I could develop my career, know how, expertise. With the Ministerio de Energia y Minas and PDVSA. Where I was so lucky to participate in important petroleum discoveries and thus to contribute to progress of the country.

Where I could study and graduate again, following my first Alma Mater in Leiden, Holland, now at the Universidad Central de Caracas.

Where we happily got married and where my son grew up the first part of his youth.

Such as in our most precious apartment that I was then able to acquire. On the fifth floor, mahogany floor inside, with a 270 degrees panoramic mountain view. A place with 24h/365 days spring climate. In a fully equipped brand new condominium. With marble and granite floors, a large heated swimming pool, tennis and basket ball courts, opulent gardens where to stroll and meet with neighbours, 2 private parking spots, 24h security guards, 6 meter diameter satellite outdoor tv antenna, 2 giant saloons especially for parties and meetings with neighbours.

With the light fog and clouds ascending from the valley of Potrerito and Arte Murano, visiting us every day at around sunset via the balcony. Idyllic.

We literally live in the Clouds, we used to joke.

Area donde nacio y creció también Cecilio Acosta. Humanista y uno de los más polifacéticos escritores y pensadores del siglo XIX. Muy amigo del poeta cubano José Martí, que vio la luz en el pueblo cercano San Diego de los Altos en febrero, 1818. Estuve estudiando todos los reportes del FMI en la biblioteca en Intevep. La situacion y el futuro de Venezuela es muy, muy diferente y mucho mas grave de como lo pintan. Y como dicen el Sr. Presidente dr. Lusinchi y su secretaria dona Blanquita, todos los días en la tele….anno 1989″.

Muy, muy, muy lamentablemente, pero mis premoniciones se hicieron realidad. Tal como lo explico muy claramente luego en 1988 y 1999 ex-presidente Carlos Andres Perez en sus celebres entrevistas con Napoleon Bravo y Marcel Granier:

” Avanzamos hacia el caos. Nuestro pueblo vive una inconsciencia inverosimil. Que lo ha llevado a una ceguera insólita. Vamos a hundir al pais en una tragedia que ya no debería volver a vivir jamas, nunca Venezuela. Parece que tenemos que llegar hasta abajo, trepidar sobre el fondo para que volvamos a levantarnos……Una dictadura de Chavez….”.

Y en el profundo y premonitorio análisis psicológico hecho por Gabriel Garcia Marquez en 1999:

El enigma de los dos Chavez. Terminando su brillante articulo con “…Y el otro, un ilusionista, que podia pasar a la historia como un despota mas.”

La suerte de la democracia Venezolana a partir del 1999?

Now it really hurts. Whether from the near distance while swimming in the pristine emerald blue sea of Curacao. Or from the far distance from wherever we are, to read, hear, and see what is happening to this paradisiac place. It is all Gone.

In Curacao, April 2019, already some 20 000 refugees form Venezuela. Many escape and cross the sea in small boats. Many drowned and died, similar to the refugees form Syria in the Mediterranean Sea. What a gigantic tragedy. Planned and executed by the politicians with insane ideas on how to develop, better said how to efficiently and fast destroy a country.

Dos compatriotas de mi pequeña isla natal dushi Curacao fueron próceres en la lucha de Simon Bolivar para la Independencia.

Felipe Luis Brión Detrox (Curazao, 6 de julio de 1782 – Curazao, 27 de septiembre de 1821) fue un militar curazoleño-venezolano que luchó en la Guerra de independencia de Venezuela alcanzando el grado de Almirante de las Marinas de Guerra de Venezuela y la Gran Colombia.

Manuel Carlos María Francisco Piar Gómez (Willemstad, Curazao; 28 de abril de 1774Angostura del Orinoco,116 de octubrede 1817) fue un militar venezolano de origen curazoleño, prócer de la Independencia de Venezuela. Y además dentro de los canales de la historia republicana venezolana es reconocido como el Libertador de Guayana y Generalísimo Invicto, por haber disputado 24 batallas y no haber sido derrotado.

Manual Piar fue fusilado, por orden del propio Simon Bolivar. Aparentemente por una diferencia de opinion, por Piar estar mucho a la defensa de la gente de color (el mismo era morenito), es decir por discrimination racial. Y por hacerse mas popular que el propio Bolivar.

” He derramado mi propia sangre ” dijo Bolivar llorando, después del fusilamiento que el mismo no quiso presenciar.

Así se paga aparentemente a los buenos amigos y colaboradores. Fusilándolos.

Yo mismo estuve en la celebración, conmemoración 201 anos, muerte/fusilamiento Piar, en Willemstad, Curacao en octubre 2018. Con representante oficial, el consul de Venezuela, familiares actuales y descendientes directos de Piar y dignatarios de Curacao. En esta oportunidad se dijo que Piar sera incorporado en el Panteón Nacional en Caracas.

Simon Bolivar y sus 2 hermanas vivieron en Curacao, donde fueron cobijados y bien recibidos cuando se tuvieron que escapar de Venezuela.

The Octagon Museum houses the Bolívar exhibit in memory of the Curaçao connection to Simón Bolívar (1783-1830). In 1812 after the first stage of the revolt in Venezuela had failed, Bolívar took refuge on the island of Curaçao. He and his two sisters arrived penniless and had to rely on the generosity of friends on the island. Lawyer and merchant Mordechai Ricardo lodged them in two houses. The two sisters stayed in the octagonal building by the sea, while Bolívar worked an studied in a small house on a hill overlooking the busy harbor of Willemstad.

Alma Llanera, tiene su origen y esta basada sobre una composición del músico Jan Gerard Palm músico de Curacao. Es un “cover” hecho por Pedro Elias Gutiérrez en 1914.The Engelenzang waltz is not only one of the most beautiful but also the oldest known Curaçaon waltz and dates from before 1867. Jan Gerard Palm wrote this waltz dreaming of singing angels visiting him to take away his soul… The second part of Palm’s waltz Mita was reused by Pedro Elias Gutiérrez in 1914 when he composed Alma Llanera. It became one of the most popular joropos from Venezuela.

The Extended Continental Shelf of Suriname was approved by the UN UNCLOS Commission on 17 March 2011.

This means that this whole area could now be explored for lucrative deep sea mining. Underwater mining has been touted as the new frontier for the resources industry.

The following represents solely my own ideas and musings on this subject, as an independant explorationist and business developer of resources.

Deep sea mining is a relatively new mineral retrieval process that takes place on the ocean floor. Ocean mining sites are usually around large areas of polymetallic nodules or active and extinct hydrothermal vents at 1,400 to 3,700 metres below the ocean’s surface.The vents create globular or massive sulfide deposits, which contain valuable metals such as silver, gold, copper, manganese, cobalt, and zinc.

Among other kinds of mineral deposits found on the sea bed, the most extensive are potato- sized nodules containing high concentrations of phosphates or manganese oxide. Phosphate nodules are generally found on continental shelves, where they are formed by the chemical precipitation of phosphate at the sediment- water interface. Manganese nodules, on the other hand, usually occur at the bottom of deep oceans, particularly the central Pacific and Indian oceans. These nodules typically contain about 25% manganese, 15% iron, up to 2% each of nickel and copper as well as high concentrations of cobalt.

The Extended Continental Shelf area of Suriname does have the geological setting and potential for containing these metal-rich massive sulfude deposits. Both extinct as well as active deposits related with hydrothermal vents. This given the fact that this area consists of mainly oceanic crust. With a continual and steady development history of seafloor spreading and ocean crust formation that is still going on. With right lateral shearing and fracturing, along major strike slip zones (Guinea Fracture Zone), where the possible deposits could be located. Since Upper Cenomanian time, since 100 million years ago.

The northern limit of the Demerara Rise is defined by a major transcurrent fault. From here on the transition from continental to oceanic crust is very dramatic and evolves within a short distance. It is one of the few and really unique places on earth where this transition occurs in such a short distance.

Deep sea mining therefore does have as a clear potential in this oceanic crust domain. It is worthed to be considered and could contribute substantially to the diversify the economy and to increase the GDP of Suriname in the future. It represents a very valuable possible offshore “green and renewable asset ”. In line with the lineaments of the Paris Accord 2015, if properly executed….

In my humble explorationists vision it offers Suriname a unique opportunity that is relatively simple to perform.

To further explore, to harvest and eventually to reap monetary benefits from these natural riches. Up to now this opportunity has been overlooked by the country policy makers and influencers. As far as I know and/or have been able to research, such as on Internet.

Deep sea mining has been in my own mindset since I studied my second specialisation, ore geology. With renowned ore geologist prof. drs. Willem Uiyttenbogaard, at VU Amsterdam and Delft University, MIjnbouwkunde Faculteit in 1975.

Seafloor mining technology is becoming increasingly sophisticated. The latest generation of undersea machines used e.g. to mine diamonds consists of 250-tonne robotic leviathans, such as one manufactured by Marine and Mineral Projects, Cape Town.

The Pacific Island States presently are a role model in this respect. They are actively participating in a deep sea minerals project (SOPAC/SPC). And have already conducted sea floor mapping and sampling programs. Massive sulphide deposits have been discovered that contain localised concentrations of copper, lead, zinc and significant amounts of gold and silver. As well as manganese nodules with notable concentrations of nickel, cobalt. Sometimes together with high concentrations of rare-earth elements.

In 2011 Papua New Guinea became the first country to issue a mining license within its territorial waters.

Nautilus Minerals Inc., a Canadian company has been exploring a deposit since 2005. It projects to built the first submarine mega-mine in the Bismarck Sea. This Solwara project is located at 30 km offshore and targets a hugh deposit of polymetallic sulphur mineral nodules. It intends to recover mainly copper, base metal sulphides gold and silver, at a water depth of 1.600 metres.

Nautilus targeted production rate is approx 1.2-1.6 million tonnes a year. This is just a fraction of what all the sulphur deposits detected along the Clarion-Clipperton fracture zone could yield if mined. As a comparison, total production of onshore mines worldwide was 22.5 million metric tons in 2016. Chile took the top spot again by a long shot with one third.

ISA, issued in 2014 seven underwater mining licenses Three plans of work were approved for the exploration of polymetallic nodules for United Kingdom Seabed Resources, Ocean Mineral Singapore, and the Cook Islands Investment Corporation.

In the Golfo de Ulloa In Baja California. Odyssey Marine Explorations intends to drags 91,000 hectares. To extract 350 million tons of phosphate.

This is a road that Suriname could consider to follow.

Could the world’s hunger for metals and minerals, and strategies of the states for securing access to them, propel the development of deep sea mining?

Identifying the drivers of a sea minerals industry for Suriname requires within others a global perspective on the demand of metals. An understanding of the forces that influence the mining and minerals industry. And a more regional perspective on the need and opportunity in the surrounding area, particularly the USA, South America and Caribbean. The combined picture is complex, with high levels of uncertainty, due to the dynamic and often interrelated nature of the drivers.

Facts are that the need for copper, manganese and cobalt are rising, this stimulated by the electronic and automation sectors. At the same time the world reserves are diminishing. Large international mining conglomerates are therefore turning their attention to the offshore ocean bottom. ISA has already issued some 30 licenses in the Pacific.

Long-term decreasing metal industry productivity, falling ore grades, and increased costs, combined with increased environmental, social, and cultural expectations for sustainability, creates also for Suriname an opportunity for deep sea minerals as an alternate source of metal supply. Along with reuse and recycling.

The widespread and recognized need for alternative economic development, to overcome poverty and to meet the rising aspirations also applies to many countries in development,

Deepsea mining could very well represent the next gold rush.

Thanks so much for your sincere and dedicated friendship. Also for always appearing, out of the Blue, when I badly needed help.

Such as in Spain, near Burgos, just after the 6 weeks fieldwork in Cremenes, Cantabria. En route to the Costa Brava, Blanes? Our car accident that involved Jan Willem and myself. When a Spaniard fell asleep and crashed his Fiat 500 almost frontally against my brand new 2CV AK at 5.a.m., mind you.

Suddenly you appeared, like Batman,  together with Herman.

Also for storing and shipping my 40 boxes with books to Curaçao, a task for which nobody wanted to volunteer. Only much later I discovered that you were the hidden benefactor.

This was the Submission by the Government of the Republic of Suriname, December 5, 2008.

For Establishment of the Outer Limits of the Continental Shelf of Suriname.

The Extended Continental Shelf of Suriname was approved by the UNCLOS on 17 March 2011.

When serving Staatsolie as a consultant I was privileged to participate and contribute to the successful execution of this important project. As part of an extensive multi-discipline group.

And as a member of the technical G&G advisors staff. During the diplomatic negotiations and deliberations with Guyana and Trinidad & Tobago. Together with the ambassadors and staff, representing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Suriname.

As an explorationist it was an eye opener and most exciting. Realising that such a crucial country issue as extension of the Outer Limits of the Continental Shelf, in the Suriname case, depended mainly on excellent, high quality and smart geophysical-geological interpretation by the geoscientists. Just a good G&G job. Specifically of the basin evolution and herewith related sediment thickness development in the outer limits offshore area. That’s it.

To a much lesser or almost no degree it was dependant and determined by pure jurisdictional issues and/or transnational political conjectures.

The offshore political boundaries of Suriname with its neighbours have herewith definitely been established and agreed.

Onshore Tigri-New River Triangle area boundaries still have to be agreed.

In my opinion Suriname therefore ranks as the best. As far as absence of political risk and possible force majeur is concerned, related specifically with petroleum exploration within its offshore continental shelf area.

Guyana has an ongoing ” dispute ” with Venezuela, now at the mercy of ICJ, The Hague. Extensive further information on this dispute can be found in my Post nr. 25, Chapter Petroleum Exploration.

Imagine what would nesessarily happen if the boundaries were to be adapted, changed, and detrimental to Guyana (…Transnational petroleum negotiations, settlements, unitizations, repayments of already produced petroleum etc. etc. etc.). Especially the most western area where Ranger – 1 discovery is located could be vulnerable…

French Guyana was so wise to simply ban petroleum exploration. Au revoir, a bientôt ?

With right lateral shearing and fracturing, along major strike slip major zones, where possible deposits can be located, since Upper Cenomanian time.

Kosmos Energy Update on Exploration Drilling Program Offshore Suriname – DALLAS-Jun. 26, 2018 – Kosmos Energy announced today that it has completed drilling the Anapai-1A exploration well located in Block 45 offshore Suriname.

Anapai-1A was drilled to a total depth of 4,556 meters and was designed to test Lower Cretaceous reservoirs in a structural trap on the flank of the basin. The prospect was fully tested, encountering high quality reservoirs in the targeted zones, but did not find hydrocarbons.

Anapai-1A werd geboord tot een totale diepte van 4.556 meters en was ontworpen om de onderste Cretaceous reservoirs te testen in een structureel gebied op de flank van het bassin. Het prospect werd volledig getest, en hoog kwaliteit reservoirs zijn aangetroffen in doel zones, maar er zijn geen koolwaterstoffen gevonden. De put is nu afgedicht en verlaten. Andrew G. Inglis, chairman and chief executive officer : “We are still in the early stages of exploring this newly emerging basin and our forward drilling program remains unchanged given the independent nature of the prospects.

The drillship will proceed as planned in the third quarter to test Pontoenoe, the first of up to three independent prospects in Block 42 offshore Suriname.

Pontoenoe is a similar play type to the Turbot and Longtail discoveries located approximately 70 kilometers to the west in Guyana.

The Pontoenoe prospect, to be spudded mid August 2018, 2 month drilling planned (mid October in target horizon?) is located in Block 42 offshore Suriname, which is believed to be an extension of the petroleum system offshore Guyana. Pontoenoe is a late Cretaceous Liza-type stratigraphic play, Kosmos said. When combined with two other prospects on the block—Aurora and Apetina—the three are prospective for more than 500 MMbbl of resources (Question: each one 500 MMbbl or the 3 together ??).

The company has said it plans to test “multibillion barrel prospectivity” spanning five independent Cretaceous plays (Question: Upper Cretaceous plays, I must assume? Or also again Lower Cretaceous, as failed in Anapai-1). Exploration drilling is expected to continue from 2019 to 2021 in the area.

Update at 10th October 2018:

Kosmos Energy said on Wednesday it was abandoning the Pontoenoe-1 well offshore Suriname after failing to find oil.

This is the second dry well in a row drilled by the company in the Dutch-speaking South American country. The company came up dry in June at the Anapai-1A well in the Block 45.

Kosmos said it encountered high-quality reservoir at Pontoenoe-1 exploration well in Block 42 but the primary exploration objective proved to be water bearing and did not find commercial hydrocarbons.

Commenting on the Pontoenoe result, Kosmos said it believes there was evidence of a working source kitchen and the prospect failed due to a lack of trap.

“The well will now be plugged and abandoned and the well results integrated into the ongoing evaluation of the remaining prospectivity in Kosmos’ acreage position,” the company said.

According to a press release the Anapai-1 well drilling in Block-45 offshore Suriname encountered shallow bore hole stability issues before reaching the target interval (My inserted comment: very strange and unusual; this as the shallow, upper section has/should have been properly cased of long before reaching target depth. Or ” shallow ” meant to indicate, just above the target interval ??). Kosmos and its partner will re-spud the well, Anapai-1A, targeting the same objectives. Some US$ 40 mln spent on Anapai-1. The well design has been reconfigured to address the issues previously encountered. Anapai-1A is expected to spud imminently, and will take approximately 50 to 60 days to drill with results expected early in the third quarter. Other rumour: Uncontrollable circulation losses in fractured/heavily faulted area? Drilled to close to the main fault ?

It contains data and figures on Block 45 and its surrounding area petroleum geological habitat that are relevant for this well and prospectivity of the whole area.

Prospects abound in both offshore Guyana and Suriname.

Suriname is looking to get more involved in the offshore space after decades of steady onshore production. Some 109 million bbl of crude oil, generated by the Cenomanian Canje Formation source rock, has been produced onshore from Paleocene and Eocene reservoirs over the last 35 years.

Offshore remains under-explored. Staatsolie, the Suriname national oil company, indicates that 26 exploration wells (all dry holes) have been drilled over a 130,000-km2 area. But only 14 of those wells have been drilled beyond water depths of 20 m.

The big question that remains at this precise moment is how far and geologically how the prospectivity of the basin extends from the recent 9 giant ExxonMobil discoveries across the border into Suriname.

Efforts to prove an extension of the Cretaceous fan play into Suriname have so far proved unsuccessful.

Location Guyana, Stabroek Block,  ExxonMobil discoveries vs Suriname Licenses. Still 18 prospects left in Stabroek Block. In Suriname offshore, Block 58 of Apache, offers the best posibility to become the eastward extension of the “ Guyana Basin Golden Lane “. From the now unveiling petroleum habitat,  subsurface setting and geographical trend of the Golden Lane giant fields?  Suriname Block 42 and Kosmos, Pontonoe-1 well presently drliing, in this respect certainly do not nicely line up with the discovered fields. Fingers xx.  Block 48 of Apache does line up very well with the discovery trend. And is located within the migration path/area that e.g. the Tambaredjo oils had to follow, from their kitchen area to their final reservoirs.

The last 7 promising wells were all bone and bone dry. Nonetheless the very high expectations also based on de-risking by 3D seismic.(…what about including, de-risking based on sound and realistic petroleum geology…).

1. 2009 Repsol’s well West Tapir-1 (Block 30; Canyon head play, Ologocene/ Eocene target) was a failure and completely dry.

Murphy plans at June 8, 2007? Drill two exploratory wells and conduct 3D seismic studies over a period of four years in the 8,700-square-kilometer (3,360-square-mile) Block 37 located off the eastern shore of the South American nation.

November 2010, Caracara well, 120 -1,030 mmbl prospect. Good quality reservoir, without oil. But 600m of shales with oil shows above its target geologic section (Questions? Why oil in the 600m thick ” topseal “, and not in the underlying good quality reservoir sands? Is the shale a/the mature source rock?), indicating that the prospect was within the hydrocarbon kitchen area. P&A.

May 2011, Aracari well, 200 – 500 mmbl prospect. A seismic anomaly down dip of the location where the oil shows in Caracara well were encountered. Murphy believed this reduced the seal risk associated with Aracari, as the shale should provide an updipseal for the targeted formation. P&A. (Question? Why was the 600m thick shale sequence not a good enough topseal in Caracara well? Why is it a then by magic a good up dip seal in Aracari well?)

4. 2015, Apache’s Popokai-1 well in Block 58 was a failure (why?).

5. 2017, Apache’s Kolibri-1 exploration well, 129 km off the coast, in Block 53 was deemed non-commercial (“failed to find commercial quantities of oil”, why?).

6. 2017 Tullow in its Araku well in Block 54, did establish the presence of gas condensate (How much? a few ppm’s in the mudlog? was a fluid sample taken/recovered? was the well tested?). But did not (even) find a significant quantity of reservoir rocks.

Tullow, under the PSC, Block 53 has a work program that included 3D seismic, geological surveys, and the drilling of two exploration wells. One to come, pending. (Question? When?).

7. 2018, Kosmos, Anapai-1A is bone dry. Why?

Pre-drill fully de-risked by 3D seismic in addition to clear direct indications for the presence of hydrocarbons. Even with a map of the giant Jubilee field plotted on the larger area of the Araku prospect, to indicate the huge areal extent and high 700 MMb potential. Resulting in a bone dry well, in addition even without enough reservoir rocks.

High potential, high impact and de-risked pre-drill…

Just my own questions and musings?

What happened with the (fake?) direct hydrocarbon indicators on 3D seismic. This as already different wells have been drilled offshore Suriname based on “fake” direct hydrocarbon indicators that were convincing and determinant pre-drill. Hallelujah.

How come so many explorers like to be convinced and cheated deliberately by fake colours? Especially if they line up with a suitable depth contour, such that the hydrocarbon volume promise could amount to some 700 million barrels?

Just because they do not by far understand how and why these colours and these (fake) direct hydrocarbon indicators were generated? How the seismic was acquired, processed, interpreted ?

For example. Two dry holes were drilled based, within others, on direct hydrocarbon indicators. This while the 3D seismic that was acquired even failed to cover the frequency range necessary to allow for direct detection of hydrocarbons. Etc. etc.

The most western Berbice major canyon up to now has funneled the sands of the 8 giant discoveries. It may have distributaries into the Suriname offshore area, such as in Block 42 (Pontonoe prospect?) The 2 eastern canyons, Corantijn and Coppename canyons?, have funneled most of the sands for the offshore Suriname canyon head deposits and deep basin floor fans. The Apetina and Aurora trends in offshore Suriname may have been sourced by a combination of these three canyons.

Kosmos is expected to turn its attention next to either Aurora or Apetina deepsea, basinfloor fan trends, ” Liza analogs”, Pontoenoe prospect Block 42.

The geological setting and petroleum habitat of this Block 45 area is different from the setting of the last giant, mainly deepwater fan discoveries in Guyana. Therefore expectations on the prospectivity can not be extrapolated just 1-on-1 as many suggest for their own convenience. But should be considered in a much more nuanced geological way.

For example.

Provenance area of the Lower Cretaceous reservoir sands is much different around the Demerara High greater area, in comparison with offshore Guyana, in the area of the giant discoveries. Thus also existence (or not), distribution and related reservoir properties of the sands may / will be much different.

The Lower Cretacous sediments around the Demerara High are mainly a relict of a major Aptian-Albian river delta system. This river-delta system existed when the Suriname-French Guyana area was still attached to the Sierra Leon-Guinea, NW Africa area:

It had its causeway in the area in the middle, between both, ran from SE towards NW. In fact it was the incipient rift valley where later the full mid-oceanic rift of the Atlantic developed, that separated Sierra Leone area from Demerara High area. It transported and drained a large part of the sediments of the then connected northern South America-Africa area. This ancient river may have been of the size of the present day Amazone river as it transported a large part of the eroded sediments of the ” northern South America – NW Africa ” cratonic area, in Lower /Middle Cretaceous time. It debouched in the Demerara and Guinea plateau coastal and shelf area. With (not yet indicated and localised) turbidite and deepsea fan deposits in the developing Thetys ocean. Such as in the area that now represents the deeper, distal parts of Suriname offshore.

This delta system, together with the underlying Jurassic and older rocks (Permian? Carboniferous?) were severely uplifted, folded as a giant anticline during the compression/collision (and counterclockwise movement) of NW Africa’s hinge against Suriname-French Guyana. During the Cenomanian. Therefore the Demerara High represented a hugh high or mountain (up to some 3-4 km). A main part has been eroded, probably already simultaneously during its uplift. Exposing Lower Cretaceous, and almost even Jurassic rocks, that were unconformably overlain by Tertiary sediments (well A2-1 area).

Provenance of the Lower Cretaceous sediments in offshore Guyana (giant fields area) is much different, most probaby from the south. From the eroded Guyana craton in the hinterland.

Present Anapai-1 well (fault block prospect that incorporates Lower Cretaceous delta fans) spudded beginning of April 2018, by Kosmos/Hess in Block 45, has a rather low profile in the press, without bold predictions. Little published information can be found on internet.

The prospect sits in 1,500m of water and is targeting gross unrisked resources of 700mmbbls in a Lower Cretaceous structural/stratigraphic trap. It was selected to be drilled first since it was the most mature in the company’s portfolio and so drill ready. The company has modelled Anapai as being fed by a feeder system from the east, and so a different system to that seen in Liza (My note: Lower Cretaceous, Aptian-Albian delta-fluvial sediments present around Demerara High are a completely different story from Liza. Provenance areas are different ones). The key risk is considered to be the trap, due to the combination stratigraphic element of the prospect.

Kosmos contracted the Ultra Deepwater Drillship ENSCO DS-12 (formerly Atwood Achiever) to execute this Drilling Operation. It is a fully equipped modern drilling vessel (2013) with accommodation for approximately 200 crew and onboard oil and gas personnel. It can drill in water depths above 3000 meters and drilling depths up to 12.000 meters.

Hopefully it will be the first ” major ” discovery offshore ?

It is a prospect in Block 45 located on the west flank of the Demerara High.

This SE-NW seismic cross section very well illustrates the types of play that can be expected, as in Block 45.

Such as the Lower Cretacous fans, that were mainly fed by the eastern area, now occupied by the Demerara High. They are fragmented by the west dipping, gravitational fault blocks on the west flank of the Demerara High. Making it structural traps with inside an important stratigraphic fan reservoir element. Such as Anapai-1.

Just leaving your cozy mother source rock (Jurassic? proven Upper Cretaceous Canje Fm. located stratigraphically higher, on top of the target interval? Lower Cretaceous, Aptian-Albian?) behind and closing the door. When and where?? Where would you preferentially stroll to/migrate to find a suitable updip save house. Towards advertised Block 45 and Anapai -1 ???

As so dearly suggested by the Kosmos & Hess super smart geoscientists, nervous investors and shareholders that want to add sustainable value and big money?

(FYI: @ May 6, 2018: Kosmos Energy had a negative net margin of 34.98% and a negative return on equity of 12.49%. The company’s revenue for the quarter was down 11.3% compared to the same quarter last year. During the same quarter in the prior year, the firm posted ($0.01) EPS.

How do you get in it, how do you unlock the door to enter in the fault block anyway. Anyhow, would you? Or do you first enter sneaky, and when your shelter is full, you just safely close the front and back doors. And when? Are your walls and roof leakproof, by the way ? To wait patiently a few million years (how many exactly?) for Ensco DS 12 and Kosmos/Hess ?? To release you. To be produced, stored and unloaded in an offshore Suriname FPSO ?

Or would you take another simpler route and bypass as maybe suggested by your own updated buoyancy-driven Subsurface Navigator?

Which highway or secondary road would you then follow ? Were they open (…or closed) for save and unhindered travel leisure? Did you check all these points. Can you just draw it quickly by hand, on blank paper, in a few successive 3-D diagrams (no, no fancy computer generated diagrams this time)?

In a few weeks we will know the choice of Mr.Oil & Mrs.Gas. The final verdict. And for free, in the press, simply on internet, just in the early summer morning sun next July. Oil, gas or water ? All together ? Reservoir rock, yes or no? No, no fake news.

05/03/16 – Kosmos signs farm-out agreement covering Suriname Block 42

DALLAS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–May 3, 2016– Kosmos Energy (NYSE: KOS) announced today that it has entered into a farm-out agreement with Hess Suriname Exploration Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Hess Corporation (NYSE: HES), covering the Block 42 contract area offshore Suriname. Under the terms of the agreement, Hess will acquire a one-third non-operated interest in the Block 42 contract area from both Chevron Corporation (NYSE: CVX) and Kosmos. As part of the agreement, Hess will fully fund the cost of a 6,500 square kilometer 3D seismic survey, subject to an agreed maximum limit, inclusive of Hess’ share, expected to commence in the third quarter of 2016. Additionally, Hess will disproportionately fund a portion of the first exploration well in the Block 42 area, subject to an agreed maximum limit, inclusive of Hess’ share, contingent upon the partnership entering the next phase of the exploration period. The agreement is subject to certain customary closing conditions.

Upon closing of the transaction, the interests in the Block 42 contract area will be as follows:

Kosmos: 33.33% (Operator); Chevron 33.33%; Hess 33.33%

Kosmos has held rights to conduct exploration in the Block 42 and Block 45 contract areas since 2011 under production sharing contracts with the Government of Suriname. The blocks are contiguous and cover more than 11,000 square kilometers.

Suriname Nearshore Potential.

The potential for Suriname is significant according to Tom Ketele, nearshore drilling project manager for Staatsolie. The country, with more than 30 years of onshore production, has onshore crude reserves to sustain it for the next 15 years, he said. By developing its ultra-shallow nearshore resource potential, the country will be able to extend those reserves significantly.

Staatsolie has identified and ranked 15 prospects, some stacked, in water depths of 5 m to 30 m offshore. The company has plans to drill a 10-well exploratory campaign from April 2019 to December 2019, he said.

Where are the structural depth maps, sand distribution, isopachs, isoliths maps and log correlations of these leads and prospects? Are they only coloured blobs on the map, for this specific purpose? How many acres/feet do they cover? GOR? Reservoir pressure? How many barrels potential do they have? Some 20 million bbls.? Of heavy oil ? How many wells to drill to recover some 15%? Any horizontal wells? How thick are these non-consolidated sands/shaly sands/sandy shales ? How many (un-manned)production platforms? How much already sunk costs? How much future Capex-Opex involved?

Still profitable ?????
