Silvana’s zoon is nu asistent professor in Groningen.

Certamente, caríssimi amici, ciao a tutti. Pasta, pizza, vino.

Remembering also the leisure escapes to the Italian Riviera and Monaco.

Wilbert & Josely, you will certainly recall. Barolo, Barbera, Lacrima Cristi wines, you were on honeymoon.

Moving to Venezuela, 1977-1989

https://mar-petroleumexplorationconsultant.com/5-guyana-gold-mine/

This decade coincided with the golden oil boom of Venezuela, with Caracas as La Sucursal del Cielo. Similar to the prevailing ambience in A moveable feast in Paris, from Ernest Hemingway, pura fiesta y parrandas.

Een klassiek traject doorlopen, bottoms-up, hands-on across the ranks.

A gifted place, most studied in tedious textbooks in Leiden now in my hands and at my footsteps, amazing.

Amazing and gifted indubitably? 6 Miss world, 7 miss universe titles. Precious, fashionable and elegant women, everyday, everywhere, really, unique, wow.

Geluk en succes gehad by contributing to the discovery van 2 giant oil fields.

6 Miljard vaten olie, a damned amount of oil.

More than all found in hotspot Guyana-Suriname basin, more than ever to be found in Holland. Tevens enige landmark petroleum publicaties.

Time to move on diligently, carajo, se termino la fiesta.

From riches to rags. An emaciated dystopia.

Result ?

Europe and other places, 1990 – Present

Outperforming major competitors in Dutch North Sea, with hugh gas discoveries in this super mature basin as with iconic G17, the only major stratigraphic trap.

Straightforward, korte, snelle beslissingslijnen.

Geology & Geophysics offshore taken. Met business-commercial development, merger, acquisitions, new ventures. Zoals in Hongarije, California, Moskou en Siberië tijdens Gorbachov time. Never a quiet or dull moment.

” Upgrade to an allround expert, Herbert informed me “, gevolgd door drie jaar studie, executive business administration, petroleum management en Russisch, bovenop mijn normale werkweek. Dus weer 2 M.Sc. bullen gehaald, nu op mijn 51ste, continual development of knowledge, competencies and skills.

Exciting time with many tales along the road. With the Hunt’s to Moscou and Siberië. Hunting for business in times of communism.

Anecdotes, beginning in Dallas in their impressive oak boardroom with mahogany oval table and leather chairs in their Thanksgiving Tower skyscraper. And during lunches in elite Dallas Petroleum Club.

Then when Herbert whispered, with a malicious eyewink, “ Indeed, you made sure we get the big bang for our invested bucks “. While toasting Russian style with bottles of wodka at breakfast. Sealing the deal with the board of Tomsk Neft, in Strezhevoy, in the middle of Dostoyevsky’s Siberia.

Consultant sinds 2005

Most happy and free like a bird on a wire.

Great time, alleen uitdagende, succesvol uitvoerbare projecten met een degelijk consultancy contract.

Madrid and Spain ?

Excelente sitio, cultuur, gastronomie, mode en uitgaansleven everyday, a big city with a most exiting vibe.

Tasca’s, restaurants, flamenco, corrida’s de toros, art exhibitions, Real Madrid in Bernabeu met Robben, van Nistelrooy and regularly getting kicked out at closing time in Cafe Bohemio at 04:00 a.m..

Great time.

Certainly with the company’s grand penthouse in the financial district and accompanying executive business credit card, wow, good to have one.

De Madrid para el Cielo.

Suriname, Staatsolie

Maximum extension possible obtained, from the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, in N.Y..

Staatsrechtelijk uiterst belangrijk historisch moment. Privileged that I could serve Sranankondre, geboorteland van mijn ouders.

Paramaribo, further ?

Daarnaast chillen, all the time.

Etentje hier, uitstapje daar, feestje hier, toevallig daar.

Super great to have loving, supportive family around. Also Maria painting at Nola Hatterman Art Academy, preparing her exposition Tribute to Suriname and all chilling in Torarica country club.

Workshops, oefenen, up to 8 hours weekly.

Fun?

Damned hard and tedious work for old-timers, in Friolandia, Curaçao en Colombia, meestal met jongeren.

Now graduated salseros. With lots of shines, smiles and moves at dance parties everywhere. To keep on moving with the thrill of fun.

In winter when things get rough in Fríolandia ?

Luego.

Contagiado felízmente por la GaboMania ?

Finales años setenta, Lugdunum Batavorum, o sea simplemente Leiden, Holanda.

” The infamous incident outside a cinema in Mexico City when MVL punched GGM in the face during their argument about Cuba.”

Finalmente, demuestra a tus amigos y seres queridos cuánto te importan.

Yeahh…also…

Amsterdam, near Schiphol airport.

Amsteltuin Vineyard, the best kept secret of Amsterdam,

PGK (Petroleum Geologische Kring, The Hague, the Netherlands) 40th  birthday was celebrated with a splendid summer excursion and appropriate educative oenology meeting, august 2018.

I wish to share a few of my notes, musings and pictures with you.

As a geologist it is of course about the geology and terroir of this area, and its relationship with the wines here produced.

Amsteltuin Vineyard has some 3500 grape vines, allowing for about 4000 bottles of different (4), excellent, mainly white wines. More information can be found on their site below indicated.

The  Netherlands has some 40 vineyards and wine makers that produce about 1 million bottles of good quality wine.

The sands and clays belong to the marine, transgressive, Calais formation that is about 5 meters thick.  Calais deposition ended 1800 B.C. From then on formation and deposition of the peat (Holland Veen) began. Most of it has been mined and removed such as for heating of the houses. Presence of “ sedimentary  “ peat as part of the terroir is rather unique. On a list of 45 vineyard soil types (Sotheby Wine Encyclopedia 2015) I have not encountered any original peat influenced/dominated terroir, as Amstelland Vineyard. Any wine connoisseur around that can explain the specific influence of the peat? If any? How to recognize its input as well as those of the marine salty sands and clays on the smell, aroma, perfume and bouquet of these typical Dutch wines ? Many thanks in advance. FYI: Lignite (intermediate between peat and coal) is used, but as a fertilizer in Germany and in the Champagne.

Questions and Musings.

  1. Vineyard de Amsteltuin has a unique vineyard geology (bedrock and overlying soils). Geology determines some of the physical parameters that affect vine performance. That could help to explain the typicity of the wines. The Amsteltuin terroir is different from most other wine producing areas in the world. In the first place because it contains peat as a natural surface, soil and shallow subsurface constituent. It is virtually flat, horizontal and located at some 6 meters below sealevel, in a typical Dutch polder. As such water is always available in the Amsteltuin vineyard substrate. The water level and drainage is strictly and splendidly regulated by the water management system of the polder (Regional Water and Polder Authority).
  2. How does the peat in the terroir influence and determine the specific taste of Souvignier Adriana ? Any wine connoisseur around that can answer this complex and highly sophisticated (sub)surface and oenological question?
  3. Or ?

” Finally, the notion of being able to actually taste the vineyard geology in the wine – a goût de terroir – arises partly through various misunderstandings of geological terminology and, presumably, through the sheer romance of the idea. Certainly the vision makes good journalistic copy, and is manifestly a powerful marketing tactic, geology being one of the few factors involved in wine production that cannot be translocated or easily replicated elsewhere. However, the proposition is wholly fanciful for a number of reasons and in any literal way is scientifically impossible.” Alex Maltman, 2017.

  4. Or?                                                                                                                                                The geology of wine is important to the wine-maker, but of very little importance to the drinker. However, a geologist with an interest in wine is almost inevitably going to take more than a passing interest in what lies beneath vineyards. This may have resulted in the importance of the geology being over-rated. Many wine writers who are not geologists have dutifully described the geology associated with particular wine regions without actually stating how the geology is important. Jake Hancock was quick to realize that a lot of what is written about geology in wine books is at best misguided and at worst utterly wrong, and set about putting this to rights at every opportunity. Vines derive most of their nourishment from a depth extending down to 0.6 m, but will, most of the time, rely on water from down as far as 2 m for transpiration. Only during periods of drought will they draw significant water from >2 m. Clearly then, in areas where there is a deep cover of drift or a deep soil horizon, geological influence on vines will be minimal. Even where the soil is thin, geology will, in many areas where vines are grown, only control the quality of the grapes indirectly through influence on soil composition, geomorphology and water retention. These factors will be examined, together with examples of instances where geology does have a direct influence on wine quality.

  5. But? ” It is for the most part less contentious to speak of terroir when we talk about peat. Anyone who drinks Scotch whisky will likely be familiar with peat; that earthy-smoky flavour present in many whiskies (Islay in particular) that is acquired when the germinating barley is dried over a fire fuelled by this source.Fewer will be aware of exactly what this material is.  Peat is a built up mixture of partially decayed vegetation and organic matter formed in wetlands where the obstructed flow of oxygen slows the rate of decomposition. Peat is essentially formed from whatever vegetation grows in a particular area, meaning peat bogs in different regions will be composed from different material, and hence it is feasible that the smoke produced from its burning will be chemically distinct (and more relevant for the whisky lover will produce different aromas).

  9. Geographical location and history of Bovenkerkerpolder where Vineyard de Amsteltuin is located (from Wikipedia):

We have been in Medellin a couple of times, recently.
Indeed.
It is a fantastic place, lots of progress, work, restaurants, hotels, industries, fashion, medical clinics, the metro, a very dynamic environment.
Amazing shopping malls, like Tesoro, Santafé, Oviedo.
The atmosphere reminded me of the feeling I had in Caracas, back in the booming years, end seventies, beginning eighties.
With about the same divine spring temperatures all the time (…up to now).
Though, we stayed mainly in the El Poblado area, the upscale area.

But also other cities have dramatically changed and progressed through the years, we witnessed.
Like Bogotá, Bucaramanga, Cúcuta, Cali, Pereira, Armenia, Manizales, Cartagena etc. etc. etc.
Colombia is now in a good flow and direction.
Hope they extend it and continue.

Picacho Galipán y Macizo del Ávila desde Caraballeda.

Oil Painting, 1994. Impressionism style.

Artist: José Aponte (born 12 Sept. 1942),

Painter La Plaza de Los Pintores, Avenida Casanova, Caracas. Premio Nacional holder.

José Aponte before becoming a very successful autodidact painter and artist was a tough boxer.

Till the moment that he was knocked out of the ring by Mócho Hernández.

That propelled him to explore for a new and different exciting passion.

He lived for some time, accompanied by his mother, in Europe, Rome. When back in Venezuela he was assigned his own artist’s corner, along one of the main avenues in Caracas.

By Mr. Diego Arria, former governor of Caracas.

He made this painting on my request ?

It shows the really stunning and impressive mountain view of the wild Caribbean Mountain Chain.

As seen from the rugged coast and Caribbean seaside.

For explorationists additionally it exhibits and permeates the even so, most interesting dynamic geological and tectonic dimension, as described in:

My own collection.

Beautiful landscape. Art and boxing. Hands that are delicate as they are fierce!

Simon,

Thanks for your sharp comment.

Yes, indeed.

That was one of the things that amazed me.

While we used to watch him painting, in the evening, in his own painter’s corner along the boulevard. That we often visited.

How is this possible?

With those same boxer’s hands, knuckles and fingers ?

To produce such beautiful pieces of art.

But.

Reason why I ventured to ask him to make this specific painting.

That certainly requires some inner boxing fury.

To express the dynamism and geotectonic fury that formed this coastal mountain range and landscape ?

Baruch Spinoza or Benedictus de Spinosa is the most important philosopher of The Netherlands.

In tandem with Desiderius Erasmus who preceded him with a century.

They are in the same exclusive major league of philosophers. With Immanuel Kant, David Hume, John Locke, Thomas Hobbes, Voltaire, René Descartes, Jean-Jacques Rousseau etc. etc.

Spinoza
Spécial Spinoza – Le Magazine Litteraire, nov.-dec. 2017

He lived his last 6 years in this house where he died, probably due to silicosis, a lung disease, at age 44 in 1677. It is located in the Netherlands, The Hague.

Close to the city centre and top three Kee Lun Palace, Fat Kee, Full Moon Dim Sum & Hot Pot in China Town, within others…

In this house he finished his famous work Ethica.

These are my own pictures, partly, and musings. Info is also taken from books, internet and Wikipedia.

Ethics, Demonstrated in Geometrical Order (Latin: Ethica, ordine geometrico demonstrata), usually known as the Ethics, is a philosophical treatise written when just 32-33 years old. Between 1664 – 1665 and first published when about to die, in 1677.

I ventured to read and tried to understand this book as a student in Lugdunum Batavorum. Also bought several other Spinosa books (…as well as Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche, the philosopher with the hammer). In Boekhandel De Slegte and Atheneum in Amsterdam.

No, not yet. No Amazon.com or Bol.com for easy and fast online acquisitions. Just slow. Take the train from Leiden, via Haarlem to Amsterdam where you stroll along the whole day.

Spinoza
Spinoza

It is perhaps the most ambitious attempt to apply the method of Euclid in philosophy.

Spinoza puts forward a small number of definitions and axioms from which he attempts to derive hundreds of propositions and corollaries, such as

“When the Mind imagines its own lack of power, it is saddened by it”,

“A free man thinks of nothing less than of death”, and

“The human Mind cannot be absolutely destroyed with the Body, but something of it remains which is eternal.”

Baruch Spinoza (24 November 1632 in Amsterdam – 21 February 1677 in The Hague) was a Dutch philosopher of Portuguese Jewish origin. He is considered to be one of the great Rationalist philosophers of the 17th century. Other famous rationalists include Gottfried Leibniz and René Descartes.

Key ideas

An important idea in Spinoza’s philosophy is God and Nature, everything that exists, are the same thing. Opposing Dualism, Spinoza said that the body and the mind (soul) are two of God’s infinite attributes.

There is no good or evil in Nature, and that these words only have meanings for human beings. For a person, an event that leads to happiness is good, and an event that leads to suffering is bad.

Spinoza describes two (2) types of thoughts, or emotions:

  • When a person acts from his own nature, he is said to be Active. The more you understand your actions, the more active you become. Active emotions lead to happiness and an understanding of God, as well as to Freedom.
  • When a person is being influenced by another person, or a thing, he is said to be Passive.

The goal of every person is to intellectually love God (that is, understand Nature as much as humanly possible).

P.D. & Musings

Looking out from the window in the Spinoza House you see this street of my last photo.

Highly frequented by gents. In an elusive search to acquire a few minutes of undisclosed solitary happiness.

The big bang for their bucks?

Question?

I do not know if this famous street already existed in Spinosa’s time. If so, it would have been his window view to the outside world. Stepping out of his house for a break and stroll, when writing his famous Ethica, he would have walked straight into this boulevard of elusive and broken wet dreams.

How would the contents of his Ethica have then looked like?

If this lively street had already existed and had surrounded, immerged and assimilated him by then. Would he have included specific deep philosophical thoughts on this item ?

Similar to the effect the immersion had on Henri Marie Raymond de Toulouse-Lautrec-Monfa.

Toulouse de Lautrec
Toulouse de Lautrec

Known as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, the French painter, printmaker, draughtsman, caricaturist, and illustrator whose immersion in the colourful and theatrical life of Paris in the late 19th century ?

Count Henry lived in Montmartre, a part of Paris that was famous for its bohemia people, artists, poets, philosophers and poor students. He was called “the soul of Montmartre”. And often visited the nightclubs such as the Moulin Rouge

Yes. This whole atmosphere inspired him to produce a candid tribute. A precious collection of enticing, elegant, and provocative images of the modern, sometimes decadent, affairs of those times. So often used for posters throughout time.

And Pablo Picasso, Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (The Young Ladies of Avignon) a 1907 cubist painting. It was inspired and represented five women in a brothel.

Similar to Gabriel García Marquez, GGM ?

Who lived in Cartagena as a poor, rookie journalist. And often sought and found refuge such as to pernoctate, in a cheap house of joy. Bread-and-breakfast-all-inclusive? A period that inspired him with many thoughts and themes as expressed in a sublimated and camouflated way in many different parts of his 35+ Nobel Prize works.

Even in GGM’s last, post prize 2009 novel ? A candid veiled tribute. Unveiled at age 82 ?

Also.

All immersed, influenced and literary inspired by this setting. Not again Charles Beaudelaire’s Parisian capo lavoro from 1857, Les Fleurs du mal. Or Big Sur, Henry Miller, with numerous. Neither Pedro Juan Gutiérrez, also with various, such as his Trilogía sucia de La Habana from 1999.

P.J. Gutiérrez
P.J. Gutiérrez

And ?

His reputation suffered after announcing to the New Yorker in 1994 that he had been “a great prostitute man” during his marriage to Patricia Hale, and declined further in 2008 after admitting to his biographer Patrick French a long-running affair with Margaret Gooding in which he was “very violent”.

V. Naipaul, Nobel Prize literature, 2001.

But.

Last but not least least. Absolutely. The infamous and famous L.A. wordsmith and barfly. The laureate of lowlife that wrote about the wild side of life, unpolished or mundane as it could be.

” When I came it was in the face of everything decent, white sperm dripping down over the heads and souls of my dead parents. If I had been born a woman I would certainly have been a prostitute. Since I had been born a man, I craved women constantly, the lower the better. And yet women, good women frightened me because they eventually wanted your soul, and what was left of mine, I wanted to keep.

Basically I craved prostitutes, base women, because they were deadly and hard and made no personal demands. Nothing was lost when they left. Yet at the same time I yearned for a gentle, good woman, despite the overwhelming price. Either way I was lost. A strong man would give up both. I wasn’t strong. So I continued to struggle with women, with the idea of women.”

Charles Bukowski.

Fertile food for musings and speculations of philosophers and Spinosa specialists ?

Maybe, a Ph.D. thesis needed to unravel…: ” Baruch Spinoza and the influence of his red front street on Ethica “?

An unintentional, coincidentally candid tribute to Ethica and Baruch Spinoza ?

Street perpendicular to Spinoza House - Red Light District - The Hague
